ADEN, Yemen, Dec. 3 (Xinhua) -- A missile attack on Sunday targeted a commercial ship while it was sailing near the international waterway off Yemen's Red Sea coast, a senior Yemeni Coast Guard official told Xinhua.
The official, who requested anonymity, said that a ship flying the Bahamas flag received an attack approximately 34 nautical miles off Yemen's coast of Mocha in the Red Sea.
He added that the ship sustained damage, but "the extent of damage is currently unclear."
No group has claimed responsibility for the attack so far. Meanwhile, the Houthi group's Spokesman Yahya Saree said on social media platform X that the Houthi armed forces will issue an "important statement in the coming hours."
The Houthis have previously threatened to target Israeli ships in the Red Sea in retaliation for the ongoing conflict in Gaza that erupted on October 7.
On November 19, the Houthis seized a ship they claimed was an "Israeli ship" near the Bab al-Mandab Strait, holding 52 sailors of different nationalities.
Since the Yemeni civil war erupted in late 2014, the Houthi militia has taken control of much of the northern country, including the strategic Red Sea port city of Hodeidah. ■
