The House of PMO, a professional body for PMO professionals has today launched the first-ever PMO Competency Framework written by the profession for the profession.

The PMO Competency Framework is a guide for PMO professionals interested in assessing and developing organisation-wide, team and personal competences within a PMO environment.

The guidance within the PMO Competency Framework can be used by any PMO professional to assess their current knowledge and experience; to identify skills gaps and development needs and to benchmark themselves against a professional PMO standard.

The PMO Competency Framework is a career companion guide, to assist PMO professionals through the rewarding, challenging and continuously evolving profession that PMO has become.

Lindsay Scott, co-founder of House of PMO said:

The PMO Competency Framework features the different types of PMOs that exist today which makes it a really useable career resource regardless of what type of PMO you work in. It’s also applicable for anyone at any level of their career – for Administrators, Analysts, Managers and Directors. We really have focused on making it accessible to all.”

The PMO Competency Framework has been created by PMO professionals for PMO professionals, developed over a three year period by the volunteer PMO community at PMO Flashmob.

Drawing on collective experience from a wide range of PMO professionals from around the world, the new Framework was developed to improve standards in PMO professional development and support those wishing to develop in their roles.

The first edition of the PMO Competency Framework has been edited by Eileen J Roden, Carol Hindley and Lindsay Scott:

Today Eileen Roden, co-founder of House of PMO said:

We couldn’t have done it without the community support, it’s been a long journey and sometimes difficult journey to pull it all together, and a real example of standing on the shoulders of giants to get to today’s launch.”

The PMO Competency Framework is now available to purchase from Amazon.

APMG

With the release of the PMO Competency Framework, the House of PMO is also launching new professional development standards based on the Framework.  Examination body, APMG International – a global accreditation and examination institute – will be assessing learners and providing the examinations for the new certifications. Successful candidates will be awarded a digital badge which can be shared on social media and email signatures. The courses, which accompany the certifications, will be available for Accredited Training Organisations (ATOs) to deliver from May 2021.

Richard Pharro, CEO APMG International said,

“For too long the PMO community have been poorly served with no direct recognition of their capabilities and contribution to the successful delivery of projects and programmes. The House of PMO changes that with a clear focus on their professional and career development. APMG are delighted to help them realise this ambition.”

Eileen Roden added,

“With this new body of work, the PMO profession can take another step forward to maturity by providing clarity on the requirements and expectations of the key roles within the profession, both now and as they continue to develop and evolve.”

The House of PMO, headquartered in the UK with an international reach, creates a home for PMO professionals where they can develop themselves, support the development of others and contribute to the development of the PMO profession. Further information about the work the House of PMO are carrying out can be found at www.houseofpmo.com

The House of PMO, a new professional body for PMO professionals was launched today by Lindsay Scott and Eileen Roden – the team behind the PMO Flashmob and The PMO Conference.

The House of PMO (HoPMO), headquartered in the UK with an international reach, creates a home for PMO professionals where they can develop themselves, support the development of others and contribute to the development of the PMO profession.

The House of PMO is launching new professional development standards based on the forthcoming PMO Competency Framework and the redeveloped Project and Programme Support Office (PPSO) Essentials and Advanced Practitioner certifications acquired from the British Computer Society’s (BCS) today.

Eileen Roden, co-founder of the House of PMO said:

“It’s great to be able to further develop these respected certifications in line with the continuingly evolving PMO profession, and broaden their availability to a wider audience.”

The new professional body will continue to provide a membership based community platform, arranging networking opportunities through the already established PMO Flashmob. With over 7000 members today, PMO Flashmob is an informal networking and learning community, bringing professionals together to help develop themselves. The House of PMO will also continue the annual conference, The PMO Conference, now in its seventh year.

Lindsay Scott, co-founder of the House of PMO said this today about the new professional body:

“There are a lot of PMO professionals out there in the workplace who are doing great work supporting projects, programmes and portfolios and we wanted to do something to help them develop effectively, such as having a recognised standard and training programme; having access to the latest research studies and the sharing of success stories. Today is the first step, with lots planned to help us realise our vision of establishing PMO as a profession.”

The House of PMO is committed to annually reinvesting a minimum of 30% of pre tax profits into the development of PMO as a profession and with a new membership structure, it will be the members who decide how this money is spent.

“It’s crucial that PMO professionals continue to shape the future of their own profession and the House of PMO provides an inclusive and organised way to do just that” Lindsay Scott said, adding “We can’t wait to get started in making it happen”

The new professional development standards are launched in April 2021 with the PMO Competency Framework being launched mid-February 2021.

Project ChallengeProject Challenge returns to London Olympia on Tuesday 10th and Wednesday 11th October with a full project management expo and over 40 project management seminars available. The event is free of charge to attend for PM practitioners – registration available through the Project Challenge website.

Alongside the full project management exhibition there are sessions available in four zones at the expo – solutions, masterclass, learning and controls. Attendees are free to choose sessions throughout both days. Sessions include recently announced:

Navigating the PPM Maturity curve in rapid growth environments

Scott Harberd, Project & Programme Manager, KeyedIn Projects

Join Scott Harberd as he shares his experiences and lessons learned implementing PPM Software across a number of FTSE 100 organisations experiencing rapid growth.

In this session Scott will focus on a specific implementation of KeyedIn Projects at one of the UKs largest airlines as they looked to drive better decision making, effective planning, improved estimations and smarter resourcing.

This presentation will be useful for anybody that is exploring the possibility of implementing PPM and those looking for practical tips on how to overcome some of the typical challenges associated with a period of transformation and change.

Should my PMO manage innovation as well as delivery?

Duncan Griffin, PPM Consultant, CPS

More and more organisations are looking to embrace innovation but lack the structure and tools to support it. Many organisations already have a function in place for delivery but to effectively manage change and drive innovation it should surely be managed end to end.

Starting with strategy and ideation through to implementation and ending with benefits. What part does the PMO play in creating the environment for and managing that process? Built on Office 365, edison365 combines an intuitive ideation platform and a leading Project Portfolio Management tool, to deliver end to end innovation.

Can banks de-risk programmes?

Pindy Bhullar, Director, UBS

Banks spend billions on programmes each year. The volume of change, regulatory impact and limited economic growth has resulted in complex and riskier programmes.

How can we improve the planning phases of programmes in banks to reduce risks and ensure we continuously minimise risks throughout the lifecycle?

This presentation will describe a methodology to de-risk programmes and also explore a theoretical case study exploring the mechanisms to de-risk programmes in banks.

The PMO Conference is back for a third year this summer at St Paul’s in London – and over 400 PMO practitioners come together to gain great inspiration and ideas to push their PMO and their careers forward.

Will you be amongst them?

The PMO Conference gives you 19 hours of new PMO content, spread across four streams from 23 inspirational speakers. Can’t decide what to see on the day? All delegates receive the full video set of presentations from the PMO Conference to watch back at the office.

The PMO Conference also features the PMO Exhibition – the largest ever in the UK with 23 organisations showcasing PMO products and services to help you and your organisation push your PMO on.

The PMO ConferenceThe PMO Conference is a full on day – kicking off at 8am in the morning with breakfast networking and expo, the main keynote starts at 9am.

Mark Price Perry, the world renowned PMO author of the Business Driven PMO, brings his energy and passion to kick-start the day and challenge you to Test Your Convictions.

You then have a choice of sessions that take you up to the lunch break – choose themes such as managing stakeholders; Agile PMO; portfolio management or listen to a PMO case study – real stories from the trenches.

Lunchtime gives you chance to get back into the expo – pick up the latest in products and services happening in the PMO area. Take time to connect with other PMO practitioners or browse the bookshop.

Not looking forward to the post lunch slump as the afternoon session gets underway?

We’ve got it covered with four fast paced, innovation, even controversial PMO Flash Talks – you’ll leave the session energised ready for the next two sessions. Choose from themes that cover PMO governance; strategy; innovation or further case studies from real PMO practitioners.

We finish the day with brain tricks and behaviour fixes to achieve extraordinary results, inspiring everyone to find the gap between stimulus and response and be the best they can be.

An energising and inspiring end to the PMO Conference.

But don’t forget, you take away all the presentation sessions with your 19 session video pack – perfect for catching up on the sessions you couldn’t make – and sharing them with the team back at the office.

Make sure you are at the UK’s premier PMO event of the year this June in Central London.

Project Management Benchmark Report from Arras PeopleArras People, the project management recruitment and career specialists release the latest annual report on the UK and Global Programme and Project Management domain. The report polled over 2,100 permanent and contract Programme and Project Management professionals during December 2015 and January 2016.

The Project Management Benchmark Report (PMBR) 2016 shows how the UK’s economic turbulence is affecting project management practitioners’ earnings, aspirations and professional life.

Having entered 2015 with some green shoots of recovery after ‘the great recession’; further global impacts appear to have stunted some of the optimism and growth as issues in China, the EU and the impact of the war in Syria all played their part. On the upside low inflation and falling oil prices meant that even with low pay rises most of the respondent’s maintained their standard of living.

Against this backdrop, Arras People have once again taken the opportunity to take the temperature of the Project Management domain in the eleventh annual Benchmark Report.

Some of the highlights of the PMBR include;

  • Employee remuneration did not show any significant inflation busting rises in 2015, with 29% seeing no increase and 38% seeing 2% or less. The only practitioners who saw significant increases were those who moved jobs, in this group 45% achieved increase >2% and 26% achieved >8% to get ahead in the pay rise stakes.
  • Demographics of the profession continue to see a worrying trend as the practitioner group continues to age. The numbers of practitioners under 34 years of age has consistently fallen since the 2008 recession. At the same time “age discrimination” is still seen as an issue for older practitioners looking for a new role.
  • Organisations looking to hire are seeing more “availability” issues as they seek to fill open positions. It is difficult to say if this is a ‘skills shortage’ as practitioner churn remains low as they still lack confidence in the UK economy moving into 2016.
  • Contractors see Government legislation as biggest threat in to their livelihood as they move into 2016. Contractors see the ongoing attacks as negative, with some looking to remove themselves from the flexible workforce. Others suggest that their day rates will have to rise further to compensate for the changes in order to maintain their standards of living

John Thorpe, Managing Director of Arras People commented, “Once again we have had great support from the Global Project Management community which has enabled us to create this highly respected report on the project management profession.”

“The current report underlines the fact that programme and project management is still evolving and facing more challenges as new techniques and technologies are introduced and championed in the workplace. Agile approaches are very much in the news, though it too does not appear to be the ‘silver bullet’ which will guarantee project success. People, the most important ingredient in the successful delivery of projects are also offering a challenge as we look to integrate the Millennial’s in the workplace alongside the Baby Boomers and those of GenX and Y. Different outlooks, character traits and expectations all add to the challenges of integration as does the desire of the younger generations to move away from ‘command and control’ to one of empowerment. The perceived lack of a return on investment from the millions of pounds spent on the old ways certainly leaves the door open to the new ways of thinking. All of which makes PPM a great melting pot of ideas and initiatives, a great place to be”

>>The full version of the report can be downloaded from the Arras People Website.

Registration is now open for people wishing to visit for one or both days via the website – Project Challenge

Project Challenge is a leading show exhibiting organisations, and features 30 inspiring FREE high quality presentations to chose from. Three early presentations include:

Managing Agile, Waterfalll and Hybrid projects within the Portfolio

Jon Lewis, Director, Ninth Wave

Ninth Wave has extensive expertise in supporting project portfolio management. We find that introducing agile management techniques alongside traditional waterfall based planning is becoming increasingly important for many of our customers.

In this session, we’ll describe and explain some of the issues in managing a mix of waterfall projects, fully Agile projects and projects following a hybrid agile/ waterfall approach, all within the same project portfolio. We’ll share Ninth Wave’s ideas and experience in this area and show some of the tools and techniques that we use to support project portfolio management with these different project approaches.

What does a Change Manager Do?

Melanie Franklin, Director, Agile Change Management Limited

Role confusion is everywhere. There is a lot of cross over between the responsibilities of project and programme managers, and now change manager is becoming a common hire, but with little agreement amongst organisations about what this role really involves. If you are thinking of a career move, or you are building a new team, let Melanie explain what is happening in the market.

She will give an overview of the ‘official’ description of a Change Manager – after all, she is the Co-Chair of the Change Management Institute UK. Melanie will explain how these responsibilities are being interpreted by organisations, and where the overlaps are with project and programme managers. Use the information she provides to plan your future career direction and take on some of her hints and tips to update your CV.

Getting things done with Digital Kanban Boards

Mia Nordborg, Director of Customer Experience, Planview

The use of visual management software tools for collaborative planning e.g. Kanban are rapidly gaining headway in all types of organisations; from manufacturing and software development sectors to white-collar and service sectors, such as healthcare, marketing, HR and law. How can one explain the spread and adoption of these visual tools?

How can digital Kanban boards help you and your organisation achieve greater success? Come and listen to our seminar and we will let you know more about Kanban boards and Projectplace.

Registration is now open for people wishing to visit for one or both days via the website – Project Challenge

The Challenges and Reality of Portfolio Management

Inside-PMOEarly December in London’s Fleet Street and PMO Flashmob – the PMO networking group – hosted the first ‘PMO Managers’ Lunch’. These events bring together PMO Managers, from a number of different industries, to talk in-depth about a particular PMO topic. At this lunch, the subject was “Beyond portfolio reporting – the challenges and reality of portfolio management”.

As organisations look to improve on the returns from strategy development and increase maturity in programme and project management delivery capability, portfolio management has increasingly taken centre stage as a business function to support that. Portfolio management is seen as the ‘glue’ or ‘bridge’ between strategy and strategy execution (delivered by programmes and projects). The PMO or Portfolio Office is the place where portfolio management practices become a reality for an organisation.

Overview

1. Portfolio Management is still not understood well enough within organisations
2. The PMO has to become more business focused – more dynamic, strategic and analytical
3. Theoretical portfolio management guidance accounts for only 30% of what is implemented
4. “Doing the right projects and doing the projects right”, the basics of programme and projects still need attention
5. The PMO need skills in relationship management and data analysis – a true combination of hard and soft skills
6. The PMO is both an enabler and a disruptor
7. Portfolio PMO needs a paradigm shift
